Following the sad news of Alan's death and as a tribute to him, the BBC is repeating this series of short stories written specially for Alan to celebrate his 70th birthday. They can be heard all next week on Radio 4Extra at 11.00/21/00 and 04.00. Nina Raine's story - The Judge is also being repeated on Radio 4, Saturday 14th at 20.45.

Parents: (late) Arthur John Howard and Jean Compton Mackenzie.

C.B.E. 1998.

Joined RSC in 1966.

Associate Artist Royal Shakespeare Company since 1967.

Married long-time partner, Sally Beauman, in 2004. One son, James, two grandchildren.

Began career at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, 1958.
